 Freestyle Batik

with Katherine Stein 

Saturday, September 21, 2019, 10am–5pm  Registration Deadline September Sept. 11

Join YVFC Long-Term Instructor Katherine Stein for a day-long course on the batik dyeing technique. Using a variety of utensils, students will create designs on pre-treated cotton with soy wax. Each participant will then use Procian fiber reactive dyes to color their fabric and watch their designs come to life. Created with beginning dyers in mind, this is a wonderful way to learn the ropes of batik and get your fingers wet in the world of hand dyed fabrics.

Course fee includes all materials, instruction, and lunch.

 

Learn the Basics of Needle Felting

 with Laura C Frazier  – Sunday September 22   1 – 4 pm

This afternoon course is designed to teach you the first steps in learning the art  and techniques of needle felting.   You’ll learn what types if fibers work best, how to select the appropriate felting needles and the technique of turning wool into flat or 3D creations.   Master the basics of making simple shapes before moving on to adding more wool for surface decoration or more complicated forms.  You will learn how to make flat decorations and a necklace using your handmade beads, leaving the class with the tools and knowledge to create more at home.

 

Up and Down on The Rigid Heddle Loom

 Sunday September 22,2019    12:30 – 4 pm

This 4-hour class will go over the basics of learning to weave on the rigid heddle loom.  You will learn weaving terms, how to calculate a warp and plan a project, how to warp the rigid heddle loom using the direct warping method, the proper way to wind a stick shuttle and basic finishing for scarves.

Participants will prepare their loom for weaving cotton dishcloths an20160911_164834-1d finish the project on their own.

Student should bring:  Rigid Heddle loom with a 7/5 or 8 dent reed, reed hook, warping peg if available, paper and pen for notes

Master Spinning Level 2

September 23 – 29,2019  regsitration is closed

An extension of the Yadkin Valley Fiber Room’s partnership with Olds College, this one-of-a-kind program has six progressive levels of classroom and independent study involving skill development, research studies and project assignments in the area of hand spinning of all major types of fibers, yarns and the end use of the spun yarns. At all levels, students are evaluated on the basis of written assignments, practical projects, oral presentations and skill development.

Please note successful completion of Level 1 is required fo this course.

 

Introduction to Inkle Loom Weaving

with Leslie Fesperman

Thursday Octonber 17    10 am – 4 pm

The weft-faced weaving possible on an inkle loom is ideal for making belts and straps. Inkle looms are versatile, portable, easy to warp, and a snap to weave on.  This five hour  course will introduce students to the basics of  inkle loom set up and weaving.  Students will practice for several inches before starting a desired project of either a looped key fob or hat band. The focus of this course is to  understand the loom and to build a foundation for future exploration of patterns and other inkle loom weaving forms.
